Next Steps Toward Conquering I-93

August 23rd, 2012

We recently announced our partnership with Ski Fanatics, and we’ve been working hard to form relationships with other vendors in the New Hampshire ‘north country’.   Awesome, right?  But why?

Our goal is to own the routes from Boston and Manchester to the ski mountains.  We want to become an alternative to renting gear at the ski mountain and/or having to go to the annual ski and skate swap to trade in your current gear for your growing family.

Ski Fanatics was a perfect match for us.  You have to pass it if your driving to Waterville Valley, the staff is very knowledgeable (and amazingly friendly), and most importantly – Ski Fanatics has KILLER GEAR!

So our next steps are pretty obvious – corner more mountains!  Currently we’re working to bring on a shop near Loon in Lincoln!  Next we’d like to go after the Conway/Jackson and Sunapee regions.

Announcing our partnership with Ski Fanatics!

August 9th, 2012

We’re very excited to announce our partnership with Ski Fanatics.  Located in Campton, NH,  Ski Fanatics is a perfect example of what GearFreedom is designed to help.  A locally owned and operated shop, Ski Fanatics has been in business for 25 years and knows how to provide great quality, all season sports rentals.  Now it’s time for GearFreedom to take that service to the internet!

Ski Fanatics is a perfect first partner for GearFreedom.  They’re a very established institution of awesome customer care coupled with some killer products.  Plus, you can’t beat their location!  The shop is located directly off exit 28 on I-93- you have to pass the shop on the way to Waterville Valley.   Plus, there’s a Dunkin Donuts across the street.

Ski Fanatics has both summer and winter rental opportunities, including:

    • Summer
      • Canoes
      • Kayaks
      • Water Tubes
    • Winter
      • Alpine Skis
      • Demo Skis
      • Snowboards
      • XC
      • Skiboards
      • Snowshoes

If you’re looking to rent skis, snowboards or kayaks up I-93 in New Hampshire, then Ski Fanatics is the ideal location for you.   Plus, they’re just plain nice, friendly, and helpful people!

Kayak Rentals in New Hampshire

July 23rd, 2012

While we’re still developing our site to be able to allow you to research, reserve and rent sporting gear through GearFreedom, we figured we should still help everyone out in finding the best opportunity to get outdoors they can.  There are many places to rent kayaks in New Hampshire, this post will explain some of the options that you may or may not already know about.

Pickup kayak to use elsewhere

If you’re looking to pick up a kayak to use elsewhere, I’d really suggest heading to a store like EMS.  It’s a little known fact, but most EMS stores like Nashua, Manchester, and Concord all rent sporting gear, including kayaks!  Their website is below par with regards to rentals, so be sure to mention that they should be looking to partner up with GearFreedom!

Use kayak at rental location

There are several locations that rent kayaks right at a location if you’re looking for a quick trip to get out but not spend your full day.  Be sure to check out Edgewater Canoe and Rental on the Merrimack River in Hooksett, NH, you can call them at 603-485-9251.

Serviced or Guided kayak trips

If you’re looking something a bit more adventurous definitely look to head up north to the Pemigewasset River or into Conway area for a variety or lakes and rivers.  A couple great places to check out when planning this trip include Ski Fanatics (Pemi – Central NH) and Saco Bound (Conway area).

Always be sure to spread the word about GearFreedom when looking for gear!

@GearFreedom – Powered by Interns!

June 1st, 2012

GearFreedom began looking for interns about 3 weeks ago after we placed 2nd at the Holloway Competition.  The financial prize we received from the competition was perfect to support paying additional help for website development.  We had an amazing response of resumes from excited and well qualified candidates looking to join the team.

When looking to make a decision on the final candidates to select, I definitely leaned on some advice at ABI’s Party at Arms : Live Free or Start event, where keynote speaker Noah Everett, the CEO/Founder of Twitpic shared that he believes you should always choose people based on attitude over experience, and experience over education.  While I’m definitely an advocate for education, I agree with this statement full heartedly and it played a major role in making our selection.

I had a kickoff meeting with our two summer interns today and I couldn’t feel more inspired.  Both are college students excited to use their knowledge base to help launch a Manchester, NH based company.  I could feel the excitement and eagerness to dig in and I’m super excited to see what they’re capable of in the coming weeks / months!

Recap and Pitching Practice

May 17th, 2012

As we’ve been doing a bit of pitching practice for an event tomorrow, I could help but realize how crazy the past week has been and felt a quick GearFreedom recap was in order.

We’ve been finalizing our presentation for tomorrow night’s NH Start Up Challenge pitch, and the more people we’ve talked to, the more people who have acknowledged that we’re on to something big.

Big sporting goods chains – You go to them for all your sporting needs, but you’ve probably never thought of them as a rental option. The fact is, that many of the national chains rent gear as well. They just haven’t spent time and energy marketing this fact until GearFreedom came around and offers scalable solution. These stores are all looking at ways to drive more foot traffic to their stores. It’s been a very busy few days talking to the a few chains, and getting to the right contacts. They all LOVE the idea of GearFreedom, and can’t wait for GearFreedom to be up and running.

Small local shops – You go to them because you trust that they have YOUR best interest in mind. We’ve been talking to many local New Hampshire shops and many are interested in working with GearFreedom to help manage their inventory as well as drive the foot traffic to their shops.

We’d love to hear what you think of the GearFreedom concept! Post your thoughts of our FaceBook page!

Wish us luck at The Pitch tomorrow!

New England Ski Getaway

March 17th, 2012

This past weekend a group of friends, my girlfriend and I took a weekend ski trip to the North Conway area of New Hampshire.  Here’s how the trip went down.

Preparation…

We had 4 couples all together and since one was coming from out of town, we only had 3 cars.  With so little space, and intentions to go skiing and snowshoeing, we were struggling to find room for gear, people and luggage and eventually had to split the gear among the three cars to fit.

We scouted out tickets to Wildcat Mountain on Liftopia and although the tickets were cheaper, we decided to wait until we were up there since we had a bad experience with weather a prior year when the wind had shut down the mountain we had tickets to.

Accommodations

We’ve been for a couple years now and love to stay at a Bed and Breakfast in Fryeburg, Maine, just outside of North Conway called the Oxford House Inn.  They have 4 great rooms, a full restaurant and bar, and the food is out of this world.  On the night we arrive we head up to a world renown beer pub, Ebenezer’s Pub, about 15 minutes up the street.

Skiing

While getting our gear ready, one of our group members found a surprise within his boot.  He noticed something inside and dumped out 2 – now blind – mice on the floor.  Sounds like we have another customer for Gear Freedom who isn’t interested in purchasing expensive equipment to store in his basement for 4 years between uses…

The skiing was just alright as the snowfall has been lacking lately.  The conditions were a packed powder, that seemed to be more packed into mogul-like mounds scattered throughout the mountain.  If I could rewind time, I would have rented some super short agile skis to get around these for the day.  Just one more benefit of being to rent your gear from somewhere like Gear Freedom.  You’ll be able to customize your gear to best suit the needs of the day.

On the way out of town, be sure to hit up the outlets in North Conway for some good deals.  Be sure to get back to me with some other weekend getaway examples if you have them!
